There wasn't space in last Sunday's Island Life to include my background box about how Roland Sanchez, costume designer for ABC's hit series "LOST," got to where he is. It wasn't easy.
His background and formal education are in psychology. He said that has helped him a lot in understanding both the actors and the characters on the complex series.
He began his career in retail (like so many in the fashion world) where people in L.A. recognized his innate sense of style. (It helps that he is gorgeous and wears clothes beautifully, with personal panache.) He was hired to style videos and commercials.
He segued into feature films with "Blade," working as a wardrobe assistant to Bob Ringwood, one of Hollywood's hottest costumers, and "it snowballed from there," he said. He worked with Ringwood on the Batman movies, "X-Men" and "Star Trek," to name a few.
He also worked with Julianna Makovsky on "Pleasantville," which was nominated for an academy award for costumes. He loves doing period costumes. "I learned different things from every costume designer I worked with. She did period costumes so beautifully," he said.
"LOST" was his first gig as head costume designer. Where to after "LOST"? He doesn't know exactly yet, but we're guessing Hollywood has something HUGE in store for him. During the upcoming hiatus from "LOST" he will be working with the "LOST" producers on a project he cannot disclose yet.
Roland Sanchez is one to watch!
